Plankton: Background for
the Teacher, by Dr. William Hamner, Ph.D
This short text provides a background for teachers or high school students
on the characteristics of plankton.

A short vocabulary list with definitions referring to the words used in
Plankton lessons and text.
A Closer Look at
Plankton
Recommended for elementary to middle school level students. This lesson
provides the students with the opportunity to classify plankton based
on different criteria. The lesson teaches the students about branching
diagrams and dichotomous keys as ways to organize information.*

Building a Plankton Net
Recommended for middle school to secondary level students. This series
of lessons has adaptations for elementary students build in. This is a
series of lessons including: building the net, using the net to collect
plankton samples, identifying plankton once it is collected, and calculating
the volume of water that the plankton sample derived from.**
